Open Access Publishing in Frontiers' Journals

The FinELib’s agreement with Frontiers allows participating institutions to benefit from a discount of 10 % on Frontiers’ publication fees (Article Processing Charges, APCs).

The discount applies to APCs paid by participating institutions (i.e. it doesn’t apply to APCs paid individually by authors). All articles will be published under the CC BY licence.

Am I eligible?

You are eligible if you meet the criteria below:

  • You are affiliated with one of the participating Finnish institutions

  • You are the corresponding author of the article

  • Your article is peer-reviewed (Frontiers categories A, B, C)

  • Your article has been submitted or accepted for publication during 1.4.2022–31.12.2024 (agreement period may vary from organization to organization)

  • The journal you are publishing in is included in the agreement.

  • The APC for your article is paid by your organization (e.g. library, department). Please note that requirements and eligibility for APC funding differ from institution to institution.

I am eligible, what do I need to do?

Frontiers will identify your eligibility:

  • Based on your invoice selection (Choose Payer → Click "Frontiers institutional members" → Start typing the name of your organization and select the correct one from the list.)

  • Based on your affiliation details (corresponding author's first affiliation)

  • Based on your email domain (official domain of your institution)

If one or more of these criteria can be matched, a funding request will be forwarded to your institution for approval.

Please note that if your funding request is not approved, Frontiers will invoice the corresponding author and no discount will be applied.

Avoin julkaiseminen Frontiersin lehdissä

FinELib-konsortion ja Frontiersin solmima sopimus mahdollistaa 10 % alennuksen Frontiersin kirjoittajamaksuista (article processing charge, APC).

Alennuksen saaminen edellyttää, että sopimuksessa mukana oleva organisaatio maksaa kirjoittajamaksun. Kaikki artikkelit julkaistaan CC BY -lisenssillä.

Onko artikkelini oikeutettu alennukseen?

Kyllä, jos seuraavat vaatimukset täyttyvät:

  • Organisaatiosi on mukana FinELib-sopimuksessa: Frontiers-tilaajat

  • Olet artikkelisi vastaava kirjoittaja (corresponding author)

  • Artikkelisi on jätetty arvioitavaksi tai hyväksytty julkaistavaksi 1.4.2022–31.12.2024 välisenä aikana (sopimuskausi voi vaihdella organisaatioittain)

  • Artikkelisi on vertaisarvioitu (Frontiersin kategoriat A, B, C)

  • Lehti, jossa julkaiset, sisältyy sopimukseen: Frontiers title list (xls)

  • Organisaatiosi (kirjasto, laitos tms.) maksaa kirjoittajamaksun puolestasi.

Huomioithan, että kirjoittajamaksujen rahoitusehdot vaihtelevat organisaatioittain esim. lehdelle asetettujen vaatimusten (Jufo-taso jne.) suhteen.

Mikäli organisaatiosi ei maksa kirjoittajamaksua, Frontiers lähettää laskun vastuukirjoittajalle eikä alennusta myönnetä.

Frontiers tunnistaa alennukseen oikeutetut tutkijat:

  • kustantajan järjestelmässä tehdyn valinnan perusteella (Choose Payer → Valitse Frontiers institutional members → Valitse organisaatiosi listalta)

  • sähköpostiosoitteen perusteella (organisaation sähköpostiosoite)

  • vastuukirjoittajan ensisijaisen affiliaation perusteella

Mikäli yksi tai useampi yllä mainituista perusteista täyttyy, organisaatiosi saa pyynnön joko hyväksyä tai hylätä kirjoittajamaksun.

Mikäli organisaatiosi hylkää pyynnön, laskuttaa Frontiers vastuukirjoittajaa eikä alennusta myönnetä.

FinELib ja Elsevier ovat solmineet Cell Pressin lehtiä koskevan Read and Publish -sopimuksen vuosille 2022–2024.

Uuden sopimuksen myötä tutkijat voivat julkaista artikkeleitaan avoimena ilman erillistä maksua noin 40:ssä Cell Pressin lääke- ja luonnontieteen alan hybridilehdessä.

Sopimuksessa on mukana 10 FinELib-organisaatiota, joiden tutkijat julkaisevat vuosittain yhteensä noin 30 artikkelia Cell Pressin hybridilehdissä.

Julkaisuoikeuden lisäksi sopimus tarjoaa tutkijoille ja opiskelijoille pääsyn organisaatioiden tilaamiin Cell Pressin lehtiin.

Cell Press agreement enables open access publishing

FinELib and Elsevier have signed a Read and Publish agreement for Cell Press journals for the term 2022–2024.

With the new agreement, researchers affiliated with the participating organisations can publish their articles open access without extra costs in about 40 Cell Press hybrid journals in the field of medical and natural sciences.

The agreement covers 10 FinELib member organisations, who yearly have published about 30 articles in total in Cell Press hybrid journals.

In addition, the agreement allows researchers and students to access Cell Press journals subscribed by the organisations.

Open Access Publishing in Cell Press journals

Under FinELib consortium’s agreement with Elsevier, corresponding authors can publish their articles open access without article processing charge (APC)  in Cell Press hybrid journals eligible for the agreement.

There is a limited number of free open access articles available per year.

Am I eligible?

You are eligible if you meet the criteria below:

  • You are the corresponding author of the article who is to communicate with Elsevier through the peer review process

  • You are affiliated with one of the participating institutions: FinELib institutions

  • Your article has been accepted for publication in one of the Cell Press hybrid journals: Cell Press Title List (xls) NB! Alterations to the list are possible during the agreement period.

  • The acceptance date of your article is between Jan 1, 2022 and Dec 31, 2024

  • Your article has been peer-reviewed. Peer-review article types include:

      • full length journal articles
      • review articles
      • short communications
      • case reports
      • short reviews (surveys)
      • original software publications
      • data articles
      • micro-articles
      • protocols
      • replication studies
      • videos.

I am eligible, what do I need to do?

Once your article is accepted, you will receive an e-mail from Elsevier asking you to fill in the Rigths and Access form.

Filling in the Rigths and Access form

  1. Corresponding Author's organization: Start typing the name of your organisation and select the correct one from the list offered by the system. Affiliation details will be used to identify the authors and match them to the FinELib agreement. If you do not find your organisation's name, please contact your library/information service for more information.

  2. If relevant in the case of your article, fill in the co-author and funder details.

  3. Based on your affiliation details you will be presented your publishing options. If your affiliation has been identified and matched to the FinELib agreement, the gold open access option is preselected and you can see that the article publishing charge has been credited.

  4. Select the CC license. We recommend that your choose CC BY which is required by many funders.

  5. Proceed to the confirmation page and complete the request.

After you have completed the request it will be forwarded to your institution for approval. Once your institute has verified your eligibility, you will receive a confirmation and your article will be made freely available online.

In the event that your request to publish open access is not approved (i.e. if you are not eligible) or the maximum number of free open access articles has been reached you will have the option to pay the APC yourself.

FinELibin ja Elsevierin sopimuksen perusteella vastaavat kirjoittajat voivat julkaista avoimia artikkeleita ilman kirjoittajamaksua (APC-maksu, article processing charge) sopimuksen piiriin kuuluvissa Elsevierin Cell Press -lehdissä.

Kun artikkeli, jossa olet vastaavana kirjoittana (corresponding author) on hyväksytty, saat Elsevieriltä sähköpostin, jossa sinua pyydetään täyttämään Rights and Access form.

Elsevierin Rights and Access -lomakkeen täyttäminen

  1. Kohdassa Corresponding Author's Organization: kirjoita organisaatiosi nimi (englanniksi) ja valitse järjestelmän tarjoamista vaihtoehdoista oikea. Järjestelmä tunnistaa affiliaatiotietojesi perusteella, oletko oikeutettu avoimeen julkaisemiseen FinELib-sopimuksella.

    Jos et löydä organisaatiosi nimeä, ota yhteyttä kirjastoosi tai tietopalveluusi, jotta saat apua asian selvittämisessä.

  2. Täytä tarvittaessa muiden kirjoittajien tiedot (co-authors) ja tutkimuksen rahoittajan tiedot (funder details).

  3. Järjestelmä tarjoaa sinulle julkaisuvaihtoehdot antamiesi affiliaatiotietojen perusteella. Jos organisaatiosi on mukana FinELib-sopimuksessa, oletusvalintana on gold open access -julkaiseminen ja lomakkeella näkyy, että APC-maksusi on hyvitetty.

  4. Valitse CC-lisenssi. Suosittelemme valitsemaan CC BY:n, jota useat rahoittajat edellyttävät.

  5. Täytä lomake loppuun.

Lomakkeen täyttämisen jälkeen Elsevier välittää pyyntösi verifioitavaksi organisaatiollesi. Kun organisaatiosi kirjasto tai tietopalvelu on verifioinut pyyntösi, saat vahvistuksen ja Elsevier julkaisee artikkelisi avoimena.

Jos pyyntöäsi ei ole hyväksytty tai kaikki maksuttomat avoimet artikkelit on jo käytetty, tulee sinun kattaa avoimen julkaisemisen kustannukset itse.

More and more scientific articles available to all

Researchers from Finnish universities and research institutions, can publish their articles open access thanks to the FinELib Consortium agreements. A total of 2929 open articles were published in 2020. The number of open access articles increases as more and more researchers utilise the open access benefits included in the consortium agreements. You can track the yearly development in the number of open access articles on FinELib’s new web page.

FinELib's website summarizes by publisher how many open access articles, have been published with the help of the scholarly journal agreements negotiated by the consortium. The information covers the number of open access articles since 2017, when the FinELib consortium first started negotiating agreements covering open access publishing.

FinELib agreements give researchers the right to publish articles open access free of charge or with a reduced article processing charge. The reduced charges are typically associated with fully open access journals. There are currently 12 agreements that contain an open access benefit. In 2020, the Finnish research community published altogether 5120 articles in the scholarly journals covered by the agreements, of which nearly 60% as open access articles. In the future researchers will be able to publish all their articles open access in many scholarly journals, with the benefits included in FinELib agreements.

FinELib has been able to negotiate an increasing number of agreements that contain terms for open access publishing as well as better terms for existing agreements.  More and more articles can be published open access in the future. The aim is that all research results are published open access at a reasonable cost, and agreements would be used to pay for open access publishing only and not for reading. Once full openness has been achieved, all research results are freely available to the entire scientific community and to citizens.

APC-projektin loppuraportti julkaistu!

Miten FinELibin jäsenorganisaatiot ovat järjestäneet APC-maksuseurantansa? Ja miten kirjoittajamaksujen seurantaa tulisi kehittää, jotta Tutkimusjulkaisujen avoimen saatavuuden linjauksessakin mainitut tavoitteet kirjoittajamaksujen läpinäkyvyydestä muuttuisivat todellisuudeksi?

Näihin ja moniin muihin kysymyksiin tarjotaan vastauksia FinELibin APC-projektin (2019-2020) loppuraportissa, jonka johtopäätökset ja suositukset kokosimme alle:

OKM:n rahoittaman APC-projektin tavoitteena oli kehittää kirjoittajamaksujen (APC, Article Processing Charge) seurantaa ja raportointia yhdessä konsortion jäsenorganisaatioiden ja sidosryhmien kanssa. Projektin pilottiin osallistui kuusi organisaatiota: Hanken Svenska Handelshögskolan, Itä-Suomen yliopisto, Jyväskylän yliopisto, Laurea-ammattikorkeakoulu, Luonnonvarakeskus ja Turun yliopisto.

Final report of the FinELib's APC-project out now!

The report is the result of a project undertaken by the FinELib consortium in 2019–2020 to explore the motivations and challenges associated with the monitoring of APC (Article Processing Charge) expenditure among its member organisations.

The report is in Finnish but contains an Executive Summary in English which summarises the key conclusions of the project while also highlighting some of the actions Finnish institutions and stakeholders are urged to take to further promote the monitoring of APCs.

Under the FinELib consortium’s agreement with Elsevier, corresponding authors can publish their articles open access during 1.1.2024–31.12.2025 without article processing charge (APC) in Elsevier hybrid journals and journals flipped from hybrid to gold open access or with 15% discount of the journal’s APC in Elsevier gold open access journals.

There is a limited number of free open access articles available. Articles will be published under CC BY or CC BY-NC-ND license. We recommend that you choose CC BY which is required by many funders.

Am I eligible?

You are eligible if you meet the criteria below:

  • You are the corresponding author of the article, who is to communicate with Elsevier through the peer review process.

  • You are affiliated with one of the participating institutions.

  • Your article has been accepted for publication in Elsevier

  • The acceptance date of your article is between Jan 1, 2024 and Dec 31, 2025

  5. In case you are eligible for 15 % APC discount, you will be asked to provide the APC billing address details. In case you do not have a purchase order number, you may add N/A or 0 and proceed. Elsevier will send the invoice to the address you have provided. Fill in the invoicing information as accurately as possible so that the invoice is directed to the correct address.

  6. Proceed to the confirmation page and complete the request.

After you have completed the request it will be forwarded to your institution for approval. Once your institute has verified your eligibility, you will receive a confirmation.

If your request is accepted, Elsevier will either

  • make your article freely available online without APC payment, or
  • send a discounted invoice to the billing address you have specified, and after the invoice has been paid, the article will be made freely available online.

If your request to publish open access is not approved or the maximum number of free open access articles has been reached you will have the option to pay the APC yourself.

If you chose to publish your article behind a paywall, or would like to change CC BY-NC-ND license to CC BY, it is possible to retrospectively publish your article open access or with CC BY license within certain time limits. Please contact your library/information service for help.
